I wanted to ask the ML team about making changes to the core theme. I had piece of custom functionality that worked using the job manager plugin and another third-party plugin. After the most recent update this piece of custom functionality ceased to work.
I think that removing job manager is a good thing as it reduces the third-party dependencies but having to rewrite the script is something that I now have to do as a result of it. This would not be a problem if my Developer knew what had been changed.
All I’m asking is that when new versions of the theme are released that they are made backwards compatible, that if theme functions are changed, and that includes their syntax, that there is a way for this to be documented (maybe in a support forum thread to avoid hackers looking for exploits on publicly accessible forums), same for database tables and hooks, so that Developers supporting this theme are able to isolate what’s changed and can update custom scripts more easily.
As this theme gains popularity – and when I bought it there were just under 200 sales on ThemeForest, now 7,056 – making sure that updates can be handled seamlessly is going to be really important not just Client side but also ML Dev side in terms of support you have to give to 3rd party Developers that are asking what’s changed.
Fortunately my project is not yet fully live but had the issues I have happened in a live environment it would have been really problematic for me.
What I’m sure of is that if you are able to deal with this aspect of your Theme it will really stand the test of time.
